Vinturi Set of 2 Essential Wine Aerators for Red and White Wine

Product Description

Red wine needs to breathe to allow it to open up, release its intended aromas, and of course, make it taste better. Vinturi's patent pending design speeds up this process by instantly aerating with ease and convenience. White wine needs to breathe too. It is a longstanding myth that white wine does not need aeration. The truth is that white wine displays the same improvements with aeration as red wine. Vinturi white is the most effective way to aerate white wine. Taste your wine the way the winemaker intended. Vinturi for white wine is specially designed to aerate white wine exclusively. Both Vinturi red and white aerators deliver recognizable improvements immediately: better bouquet, enhanced flavors and smoother finish. Perfect aeration in the time it takes to pour a glass. It couldn't be easier. Vinturi aerators come with a no-drip stand and a travel pouch. Made of acrylic. Aerator and stand are dishwasher safe. Travel pouch is machine washable. The glossy, clear acrylic is elegant and clean. But do note that there are two slight fold lines that extend upward from each air hole. These are normal. During manufacturing, material folds around rods and wraps back, and this causes the fold lines. Set of 2.

  • Set of two innovative wine aerators--one for red wine and one for white wine
  • Produce better bouquet, enhanced flavors and smoother finish
  • Simply hold over a glass and pour wine through--Vinturi draws in and mixes the proper amount of air for the right amount of time
  • Aerator made of acrylic and includes no-drip stands for each aerator; dishwasher safe
  • White wine aerator includes machine washable travel pouch; red wine aerator includes screen

This review is from: Vinturi Set of 2 Essential Wine Aerators for Red and White Wine (Kitchen)
I bought the pair of these (for red and white wines) because Amazon's price for a bundle was very good. So, when they arrived, I grabbed a bottle of red and a bottle of white wine and did some taste comparisons with the wife. We tasted a wine before and after aerating. I have to say, if nothing else, these things are very entertaining. When you pour wine into the top and it comes out the bottom into your wine glass, the wine bubbles loudly and it makes you laugh - very entertaining for a party. The difference is very noticeable. Wine run through the aerator is smoother and has more flavor. Nobody has ever guessed wrong about whether a wine was aerated or not. The quality of wine affects how the aerator works. A really bad wine may become drinkable, but don't expect it to become even good. On the other hand, a mediocre wine can become quite drinkable. So, your mileage will vary, but you should taste the difference clearly. I liked them so much, I bought another package and sent it to... Read more

This review is from: Vinturi Set of 2 Essential Wine Aerators for Red and White Wine (Kitchen)
I am in no way a wine snob. But, the GF loves to consume wine. I may have a glass a week, she's closer to one a night. So, the idea of decanting a whole bottle to allow it to breathe before serving makes sense, but you kinda have to drink the whole bottle that night. When you're entertaining, no problem. But, if you just want to pour a glass for yourself, it's really hard to commit to decanting a whole bottle.

So, I bought the kit (with the electronic wine opener, which is great fun). Now, it is a two handed operation. You have to hold the aerator in one hand, bottle in the other, glass on the table. If you don't pour fast enough, the air doesn't get sucked in through the side holes. If you pour too fast, you run the risk of overflowing. But, to be honest, it's pretty simple and you get the hang of how fast to pour and you can hear the sucking sound (which sounds odd, but it's a clear sign of air being infused with the wine). So, that's as tricky as it gets... Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars Works great but i can not tell the difference from the red / white, May 25, 2010

This review is from: Vinturi Set of 2 Essential Wine Aerators for Red and White Wine (Kitchen)
My wife drinks wine daily and as such we are always going on wine tastings and trying new wine bars. She recently saw the Vinturi Wine Aerators and tasted the wine she was hooked...this was the only thing she asked for at Christmas time. She received the Red and the White Aerators (at the time she did not even realize they made one for white) The boxes / packaging are the exact same except one says red and the other says white. There is no explanation of how they differ or how they areate differently. For kicks we did a blind taste test using red wine poured thru both and white poured thru both....no difference to our tastes (everyone tastes are different so you may have a refined wine taste). So I would suggest you just save your money and buy the red aerator and use for both (most wine shops only sell the red one so it the easier of the two to find).

As far as using the Aerator it is a must for the serious wine drinker. I thought it was a gimmick at first but I am... Read more

How Hormones Influence Blood Pressure to Rise

Hormones are the chemical messengers of the body since they release certain cells that affect tissues, muscles, and organ cells. Hormones influence blood pressure, like in the case of our kidneys where the hormonal imbalance of insulin leads to a diabetic disorder that progresses with high blood pressure complications.

If all the hormonal systems are not functioning properly or in harmony, the effect is sodium reabsorption which adversely affects the kidneys. However, this can still be controlled by proper diet or medications.

Blood Pressure

If there is excess insulin, the kidneys will reabsorb the sodium. By this, it means the cells will be influenced to re-absorb the sodium in the blood stream to cause an imbalance in the cells' mineral contents.

How Hormones Influence Blood Pressure to Rise

In this case, the particular hormone insulin will have an indirect influence in elevating blood pressure. This is common among obese or overweight people who crave for more sugar that will result to the production of excess insulin thereby making them susceptible to high blood pressure.

Another hormonal system that affects the pressure of blood is the angiotensin-renin-aldosterone system. In this particular function, the adrenal glands will produce aldosterone hormones to primarily induce the kidneys to retain chloride and sodium, and emit potassium. Again causing a disparity of mineral contents in each cell.

The aldosterone hormones are produced by the adrenal glands located at the top of the two kidneys. Aldosterone will influence the kidneys and sweat glands (acts similar to kidney functions) to preserve sodium. Even though the adrenal glands generate the aldosterone, the kidneys regulate it by releasing the renin enzyme and the angiotensin hormone.

As the kidneys release renin, the release of angiotensin follows. Angiotensin constricts the arterioles and signals the adrenal to discharge more aldosterone. Angiotensin constriction increases peripheral resistance or a condition where there is difficulty in circulating blood.

Aldosterone release on the other hand will cause the retention of salt. As a result, both hormones influence blood pressure levels while in the process of circulating blood in the kidneys.

Another cause of high blood pressure is the activation of the sympathetic nervous system which will produce renin when under the influence of stress. As mentioned earlier, when renin is discharged, angiotensin follows thereby making the blood pressure to rise. As an example, the sympathetic nervous system is activated when somebody threatens or attacks you with bodily harm.

Further, the production of renin is common among Type A personalities who are always in a competitive mood thereby inducing them to have high blood pressure. This is often treated by certain drugs that that will block the production of renin so that the angiotensin hormone will not influence the blood pressure.

Other factors being considered in the excessive production of renin are inadequate supply of magnesium in the body, serious illnesses leading to high blood pressure (secondary hypertension) and the rate at which the kidneys excrete sodium (natriuretic factors).

As can be inferred from the above, when a diet is high or low in sodium, it creates an imbalance of mineral contents in the cells where sodium is often the excessive substance.

Any excess of sodium over the calcium, potassium, and magnesium content in our body cells can trigger hormonal imbalance in our body system particularly the kidneys. Hormones influence blood pressure as a result of a series of chain reactions that emanates from improper dietary intakes.

Help! There is Blood in My Cat's Stool!

If you notice blood in your cats feces, you'll probably just about lose it.After all, it can be frightening to see your cat suffering from a potentially painful condition. However, you need to stay calm and first of all figure out why there is blood in cat stool.

If you notice blood in your cat's feces, you'll probably just about lose it. After all, it can be frightening to see your cat suffering from a potentially painful condition. However, you need to stay calm and first of all figure out why there is blood in cat stool.

Calm Blood

In a cat blood in stool is a condition known as hematochezia. It can be caused by a number of minor disorders and in some cases severe ones. Cancer and other terminal illnesses can cause hematochezia.

Help! There is Blood in My Cat's Stool!

Symptoms that often accompany blood in cat stool include increased bowl movement, constipation, lethargy, loss of appetite, excessive water intake, vomiting, and sudden weight loss. The first thing you need to do if you notice such symptoms is take your cat to a vet.

When it comes to a cat blood in stool can be caused by conditions and diseases like bacterial infections, ingestion of toxic substances, intestinal parasites, cancer of the lower bowel, inflammation of the bowel, intake of certain antibiotics or drugs, a benign tumor in the colon or rectum, consumption of unhealthy food, or clotting disorder.

No matter what the cause of your cat's problem, you need to make sure it is addressed quickly. Most commonly, blood in the stool is caused by bacterial infections. These bacterial infections generally cause urinary infections simultaneously, meaning that your cat may also be urinating blood.

In order to address a bacterial infection that is causing blood in cat stool, do NOT give your cat antibiotics. If you remember, antibiotics are actually one of the causes of blood in stools. You need to use a gentle treatment to get rid of the bacteria. Otherwise, the problem will be aggravated.

A natural treatment that is highly effective at getting rid of blood in cat stool is homeopathy. Homeopathy is very gentle because it uses only minute amounts of natural ingredients to get the job done.

For the best results in treating a bacterial infection that is causing blood in cat stool, use a homeopathic remedy that contains cantharis and uva ursi. These tonics will get rid of bacteria that are often the culprit in urinary infections in causing blood to appear in stools.

In addition to treating a bacterial infection this way, make sure that you change your cat's diet and ensure that he gets plenty of water. Stay away from tap water and commercial foods. Give your cat filtered water and natural, unprocessed food for optimal health and healing.

The key in treating blood in cat stool is holistic treatment. You need to address all possible causes. Of course this is after ruling out any serious cases such as cancer or poison ingestion. Once your vet figures out what the problem is, decide on a treatment plan and use homeopathy and a healthy lifestyle to help your cat achieve recovery and health.

Diverticulitis and Stress

It was interesting when we did the survey for the End Diverticulitis Reference what our Newsletter readers had to say about stress.

It turns out that Stress was the number 1 cause for people to have a flare up, ie Diverticulosis to turn into Diverticulitis.

Calm Blood

What happens?

Diverticulitis and Stress

Well Stress causes your body to not digest food properly. Usually when under stress blood and oxygen are not directed to the digestive system but to other areas in the body. This has a direct effect on how well the digestive system works. When the stressful situation is resolved the blood and oxygen is directed back to the digestive system. So imagine that you have the Diverticuli and you body is busy fighting an infection in them. A stressful situation comes up, blood and oxygen is taken away from where your body is fighting the infection. Guess who starts winning, yep, the infection. So you have a full blown flare up of Diverticulitis. It is important to give your digestive system the best possible chance for fighting any infections, and stress does not allow that to happen.

So what do you do?

Well avoid stress. That's obvious isn't it.

However while it is obvious we all live in the real world and not some utopian society.
So it will not always be possible to avoid stress. So we need to learn to manage it and control it.

There are things you should consider.

If it is your job that is causing the stress, is it continuous? Are you under constant pressure to perform and is the place you work a high stress work place?

You need to ask yourself. Do you really need it? I know some people thrive on it and love the stress and high action jobs, but if your health is failing then why risk Diverticulosis for the sake of a job. Might be time to have a look around at something else.

Is it something specific in your life, money, illness (Diverticulitis can itself cause stress, which can cause Diverticulitis, nasty circle that one). Then you need to face the problem and find a solution. Once it is brought out into the open and discussed you might find the solution is closer than you think. But keeping it inside will not help.

Some simple things you can do RIGHT NOW to help relieve stress.

1. exercise. get out and stretch the legs

2. deep breathing, very simple take a few deep breaths when you feel the stress building and calm down.

3. identify what is causing the stress and take actions to fix it.

4. understand what you can and cannot change. and change the things you can

5. avoid unrealistic expectations

6. have a break

7. enjoy a pastime, be it family, hobbies, something you can loose yourself in.

8. avoid chemical stress enhancers, coffee, alcohol etc

9. learn relaxation techniques, from meditation to sport

10. if all else fails GET HELP don't be too afraid to ask a professional

Is it yourself? This one is a tough one. I know a lot of people are worriers, spend all their time worrying about things and places and a lot of the time it is really just pointless. You need to control concerns and anxieties as if they get out of hand they will cause stress which can flare up your Diverticulitis.

I strongly suggest that you seek some sort of solution if Stress is a major factor in your life. As Stress is a major factor in Diverticulitis. You need to control Stress, manage stress and avoid stress. Things will go wrong and problems will happen. It is how you face these and treat these problems that will determine how well Diverticulitis is managed.

Diverticulitis and Stress

Diverticulitis is a debilitating disease that can usually be controlled by understanding the body, foods and diets. Glenn helps manage the http://www.end-diverticulitis.com website which is dedicated to supporting and informing diverticulitis sufferers and their families. The End Diverticulitis website also runs a active forum for people to post any questions to the Diverticulitis community.

Blood Pressure - The Good - The Bad - The Deadly!

Blood pressure is something we all have. It is the force of the blood against the walls of our arteries. As long as the "numbers" are within the good range everything is great. However, let those numbers start to rise and we have a problem. Depending upon how soon we find out about the rise in pressure (medical term is hypertension), we may have a very bad problem leading into what could result in a deadly situation.

There is a serious mistake about blood pressure that many people believe and that is that they can tell if their pressure is elevated without testing. Wrong. Wrong. Wrong! Hypertension is called the "silent killer" for a reason and that reason is often times there are no signs or symptoms. An individual cannot tell if their blood pressure is in the dangerous range unless they are tested. This can be done with a monitor purchased locally, from a health care provider (the nurse at a doctor's office or at a health screening) or some stores and malls have a blood pressure monitor for their customers.

Blood Pressure

As mentioned above, the frightening thing about developing hypertension is that there are no warning signs or symptoms. It doesn't matter about your age, it doesn't matter about your gender, and it doesn't matter about your race. Anyone can develop high blood pressure. It has been estimated that one out of every three or four American adults has hypertension.

Blood Pressure - The Good - The Bad - The Deadly!

The sad thing is that once it develops, it will last a lifetime; however, with diet, exercise, a weight loss program and stress management techniques many individuals have been able to come off their medication (with their physician's approval) and keep it under control.

Normal blood pressure should be less than 120/80 mmHg (millimeters of mercury). When we speak it, we say "120 over 80". The 120 mmHg is the systolic number (top number) and 80 mmHg is the diastolic number (down number).

High blood pressure is 140/90 or higher.
Prehypertension or high normal blood pressure is 130/85.

Tips for taking your blood pressure: Before having your blood pressure taken, go to the bathroom if you have to since a full bladder can change your measurement. Don't smoke cigarettes or drink coffee 30 minutes before being tested. Sit for 5 minutes with your back against the chair and feet flat on the floor before the measurement is taken. Rest your arm on the table. In order for the results to be accurate, your arm on the table needs to be at the level of your heart. Wear short sleeves so that your arm is exposed. There should be two readings taken at least two minutes apart then average the results. Don't forget to ask the doctor or nurse to give you the reading in numbers not whether the reading is normal, low, or high.

With the lifestyle that we live, we should encourage our children, starting at age 18, to have their blood pressure checked every 2 years. If an individual is over 40 years old, they should check their blood pressure often since most Americans are at risk after age 40.

Consider that you may be at an even higher risk level if you are overweight, have a family history of hypertension, eat food high in salt, don't exercise on a regular basis, smoke, drink alcohol (more than 2 drinks per day for men and 1 drink per day for women).

As the pressure increases so do your chances of getting heart disease, kidney disease, having a stroke or going blind. Not only does the quality of life suffer with these health issues, but consider how dealing with them can destroy you financially - even if you have insurance.

Begin now to take control of your health by eating better, doing moderate exercise, losing weight and following some simple stress management techniques to lower and control your hypertension. By controlling your blood pressure you may be able to spend your money on activities you can enjoy with your friends and family rather than struggling to pay your medical debt.

Who Said Bananas Are Not Good For You?

After reading this, you'll never look at a banana in the same way again.

Bananas: Containing three natural sugars - sucrose, fructose and glucose combined with fibre, a banana gives an instant, sustained and substantial boost of energy. Research has proven that just two bananas provide enough energy for a strenuous 90-minute workout. No wonder the banana is the number one fruit with the world's leading athletes. But energy isn't the only way a banana can help us keep fit. It can also help overcome or prevent a substantial number of illnesses and conditions, making it a must to add to our daily diet.

Calm Blood

A few people have a slight problem with the digestion of bananas, the simple answer, even though it sounds strange, is to sprinkle a little Pepper on the banana before eating, it works wonders.

Who Said Bananas Are Not Good For You?

Anaemia: High in iron, bananas can stimulate the production of haemoglobin in the blood and so helps in cases of anaemia

Blood Pressure: This unique tropical fruit is extremely high in potassium yet low in salt, making it the perfect to beat blood pressure. So much so, the US Food and Drug Administration has just allowed the banana industry to make official claims for the fruit's ability to reduce the risk of blood pressure and stroke.

Brain Power: 200 students at a Twickenham (Middlesex) school were helped through their exams this year by eating bananas at breakfast, break, and lunch in a bid to boost their brain power. Research has shown that the potassium-packed fruit can assist learning by making pupils more alert.

Constipation: High in fibre, including bananas in the diet can help restore normal bowel action, helping to overcome the problem without resorting to laxatives.

Depression: According to a recent survey undertaken by MIND amongst people
suffering from depression, many felt much better after eating a banana. This is because bananas contain tryptophan, a type of protein that the body converts into serotonin, known to make you relax, improve your mood and generally make you feel happier.

Hangovers: One of the quickest ways of curing a hangover is to make a banana milkshake, sweetened with honey. The banana calms the stomach and, with the help of the honey, builds up depleted blood sugar levels, while the milk soothes and re-hydrates your system.

Heartburn: Bananas have a natural antacid effect in the body; so if you suffer from heartburn, try eating a banana for soothing relief.

Morning Sickness: Snacking on bananas between meals helps to keep blood sugar levels up and avoid morning sickness.

Mosquito bites: Before reaching for the insect bite cream, try rubbing the affected area with the inside of a banana skin. Many people find it amazingly successful at reducing swelling and irritation.

Nerves: Bananas are high in B vitamins that help calm the nervous system.

Overweight and at work? Studies at the Institute of Psychology in Austria found pressure at work leads to gorging on comfort food like chocolate and crisps. Looking at 5,000 hospital patients, researchers found the most obese were more likely to be in high-pressure jobs. The report concluded that, to avoid panic-induced food cravings, we need to control our blood sugar levels by snacking on high carbohydrate foods every two hours to keep levels steady.

PMS: Forget the pills - eat a banana. The vitamin B6 it contains regulates blood glucose levels, which can affect your mood.

Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD): Bananas can help SAD sufferers because they contain the natural mood enhancer tryptophan.

Smoking: Bananas can also help people trying to give up smoking. The B6, B12 they contain, as well as the potassium and magnesium found in them, help the body recover from the effects of nicotine withdrawal.

Stress: Potassium is a vital mineral, which helps normalize the heartbeat, sends oxygen to the brain and regulates your body's water balance. When we are stressed, our metabolic rate rises, thereby reducing our potassium levels. These can be rebalanced with the help of a high-potassium banana snack.

Strokes: According to research in "The New England Journal of Medicine," eating bananas as part of a regular diet can cut the risk of death by strokes by as much as 40%!

Temperature Control: Many other cultures see bananas as a "cooling" fruit that can lower both the physical and emotional temperature of expectant mothers. In Thailand, for example, pregnant women eat bananas to ensure their baby is born with a cool temperature.

Ulcers: The banana is used as the dietary food against intestinal disorders because of its soft texture and smoothness. It is the only raw fruit that can be eaten without distress in over-chronicler cases. It also neutralizes over-acidity and reduces irritation by coating the lining of the stomach.

Warts: Those keen on natural alternatives swear that if you want to kill off a wart, take a piece of banana skin and place it on the wart, with the yellow side out. Carefully hold the skin in place with a plaster or surgical tape!

A banana really is a natural remedy for many ills. When you compare bananas to an apple, it has four times the protein, twice the carbohydrate, three times the phosphorus, five times the vitamin A and iron, and twice the other vitamins and minerals. It is also rich in potassium and is one of the best value foods around. Maybe its time to change that well-known phrase so that we say, "A banana a day keeps the doctor away!"

P.S. Bananas must be the reason monkeys are so happy all the time!

How Does Smoking Cigarettes Reduce Stress?

It is said that cigarettes help to reduce stress and help people relax, a fact smokers regularly produce when asked why they can't quit smoking. "I can't quit I'm too stressed out." Is a common sentence uttered by many a smoker every day. And when in a tough, problematic, critical and anxious situation a smoker will more than likely 'need' a cigarette to calm his nerves.

And smokers also get several other benefits from smoking including increased concentration, an added energy 'boost' mental 'strength' to deal with tough situations, curing boredom and relaxation.

Calm Blood

These aspects can be condensed into two main beneficial areas of smoking. Firstly that, smoking is calming and relaxing, and secondly, it helps smokers concentrate and think clearly.

How Does Smoking Cigarettes Reduce Stress?

So on the Calming and Relaxing side - cigarettes take the stress out of life (relaxation) and help relive tension and stress. The benefits of smoking are to help smokers calm down and reduce anxiety and stress. When you visualise or think of relaxing what comes to your mind? It's usually a slumping of the shoulders effect, that aaaaaahhhhhhhhh... slip into your arm chair and letting go feeling - you are relaxing.

On the Strength and Boost side - smoking is uplifting, helps with concentration, keeps smokers on their toes and gives them mental strength. The other benefit of smoking is that it lifts smokers up a level - their senses are awakened. When you visualise or think of yourself concentrating and being uplifted what comes to mind? Generally it's a head up, on our feet, eyes open, chest out, shoulders back and an alert state of mind and effect - it gives you that I'm ready, let's do it and let's go feeling.

So cigarettes can have two effects - at times cigarettes can make you feel more relaxed and calmer - a general feeling of tranquillity or peacefulness. AND cigarettes can make you feel more confident, more capable, better equipped to deal with tough situations and they can give you increased concentration - a general energetic and empowered feeling.

But how is it that this same product or substance can do both of these things? Two different things that are complete opposites?

Smokers have been told, and believe that cigarettes not only help to lower stress levels but they also help to keep you on your toes - two completely different effects. Relaxation is a suppressing feeling while concentration is an uplifting feeling.

How can the same substance or product make the body feel up and raring to go and also make it relaxed and increase inner tranquillity?

The truth is that cigarettes can't make or help smokers do both, or either - it's impossible. You've also been told that cigarettes can cure boredom, help you enjoy your coffee and tea and meals and also sex more.

But again, how can cigarettes do all of these things? Yes nicotine does have a stimulating effect, (as it releases dopamine, the body's natural pleasure drug, into the brain) but how the hell does it make you feel up, down and everything in between?

Basically we have been told that cigarettes can pretty much do whatever you want them to, depending on the circumstances surrounding you while you smoke. So if you need some mental energy or strength - have a cigarette and if you want to relax and forget about your problems then you should have a cigarette too! How can the same cigarette make you feel how you want to feel, depending on your choosing?

The truth is that despite nicotine releasing dopamine into the brain, all the other substances in a cigarette actually put a huge strain on your brain and body - they make you feel more tense, more anxious, more stressed and more on edge. No matter how much you argue against this it's the cold hard truth!

Look at the undeniable stressful effects of smoking on you and your body below.

1. When carbon monoxide and nicotine enter your body they reduce the amount and supply of oxygen to your brain. Without this oxygen (the fuel of the brain), your brain struggles to function properly, think clearly and concentrate.

It is a fact that nicotine and carbon monoxide reduce oxygen levels in a smoker's body and it is also a fact that the body needs oxygen to concentrate, not even the doctors and scientists can deny that!

Essentially oxygen is the basis of all activity in the body - any effort the body makes (from thinking to running), is harder with less oxygen. The carbon monoxide and nicotine in cigarettes prevent oxygen from reaching the brain and the other organs in the body - this simply cannot help you relax or concentrate. It's impossible!

The nicotine may give you a little pick me up, but it and cigarettes simply cannot do all of the things that millions of smokers, just like you have been led to believe and continue telling yourself.

2. Nicotine is a vaso-constrictor - it shrinks your veins and arteries in size, meaning that your heart is forced to work harder to pump the same amount of blood around your body, but through a smaller space. Add to that, the fact that tar and the other chemicals in cigarettes are being deposited in your veins reducing blood flow even more.

The result is that your beats 35,000 times more per day than a non-smoker and your blood pressure is also ten to twenty points higher than it should be, under this added workload.

3. The effect that nicotine has on the insulin in your blood puts your body under constant stress. Every forty five minutes or so, when you smoke, the nicotine in your body blocks the release of insulin (this is the appetite suppressant effect).

Once this nicotine has worn off your insulin is re-released, and forty five minutes to an hour or two later you have another cigarette.

This stop start process puts a huge strain on your body - a non-smoker's body will only reduce the flow of insulin when he really needs it - when he hasn't eaten in a while. But smokers make their body's stop-start this process twenty times more, or more a day than a non-smoker. This is an added stressful workload on your body.

4. The several thousand chemicals, poisons, toxins and carcinogens in a cigarette force the body into a state of shock.

When you inhale the smoke from a cigarette your body has to adapt to the presence of harmful chemicals. Each of which are deposited in your veins, lungs, heart, arteries and other organs in your body, then when you stop smoking for a few hours (e.g. at night) your body does it's best to clear out the foreign substances.

You will also experience this process through a 'smoker's cough' in the day and also in the morning, when yours body has had eight hours or so to start the cleansing process, and you cough up a lot of mucus.

Both of these attempts at cleaning out the toxins puts your body through a strenuous cleansing regime

process every time you stop smoking, every day of your smoking life. A non-smoker will only experience this cleansing process, as extensively as a smoker when he has a virus or infection or if they smoke a cigarette.

The truth is that smoking is only an 'effective' stress relief tool because you believe cigarettes and nicotine can help you. And that is the key - you believe.

It all comes back to what you think. Because you tell yourself that cigarettes calm you, you think they do. Because you tell yourself that they help you concentrate, you think they do (despite the fact that you are putting a huge strain on your system - your heart beats an extra 35,000 times per day due to the reduction in vein size making your blood pressure higher).

So even though cigarettes and nicotine are having a harmful and weakening effect on your body, which you have always known, you believe that they make you stronger and more capable of dealing with life. It is a clever trick that the tobacco companies have played on you!

They have shown you on films, on TV and in commercials that cigarettes help you concentrate, relive stress, beat problems, enjoy sex more and that they make men more manly and women more sexy.

You have to give them credit because it has worked and it is still working! But once you take a step back and look at the overall picture, you can see that advertising and your beliefs have led you to believe that you need cigarettes and nicotine, and that they bring you many benefits. When in fact that is all in your head!

But it can't just be the placebo effect (believing that something will happen, makes it happen) that makes you concentrate and relax can it? The truth is no, but only to an extent.

So yes when you smoke you may feel slightly relaxed - this is down to the way you breathe when you smoke. Have you noticed any difference in the way you breathe when you smoke? Take a minute and put your fingers to your lips and pretend you are smoking, or better yet - light up a cigarette!

Have you noticed anything different in comparison to your normal breathing patterns? You should have noticed the two following patterns.

Firstly, your in-breath was much stronger when smoking. Try it again, inhale as if you were smoking a cigarette. This deeper in-breath sucks in a lot more air than normal breathing because you are sucking air in from the bottom of your stomach (your diaphragm). With this extra air also comes more oxygen - your brain and body's fuel, up to 20% more oxygen in fact than when you breathe normally.

The second thing you should have noticed is the way you exhale. Your out-breath was also much stronger and deeper, when smoking. Try it again, breathe out deeply without cigarette smoke, do it several times.

How do you feel? You feel relaxed and calm don't you! Exhaling feels good, especially when it is done strongly. Have you noticed that when you laugh and when you sigh you exhale and breathe out strongly? Breathing out has a calming and positive effect on the body. So even though the smoke puts a strain on your system, when you breathe out strongly you feel good.

So basically when you smoke you are just practicing deep breathing exercises. The deep breaths provide your body and organs with more oxygen, which helps you to relax and release stress to a degree. I say to a degree because that extra oxygen is not enough to compensate for the strain that the chemicals in a cigarette put on your body.

So smoking itself doesn't actually reduce stress, or help you concentrate in any way - it's the way you breathe that does that for you. Have you ever wondered why people tell you to take deep breaths when you feel a craving or withdrawal symptoms? It's because the deep breathing mimics the way you breathe when you smoke.

Every time you have a cigarette you put your body under stress. Then your body tries to clean out the chemicals, which again makes you feel uncomfortable, and puts you under stress. And you do this every day going round and round in circles, no wonder you a re so stressed!

Then when your body realises it has extremely low blood sugar (no nicotine to block insulin which releases your sugar stores) you get pangs and cravings because your body needs sugar - it becomes stressed. You then have a cigarette to relieve that stress. Then after forty five minutes or so the process starts all over again! You are just going around in one huge destructive and pointless circle.

People say smoking reduces stress, when in fact - the stress is caused by the last cigarette - when nicotine and the chemicals enter your body you put it under a huge strain. Then when the nicotine leaves your body it becomes stressed - because there is no nicotine to release sugar into the blood.

Tobacco increases stress and then relieves it (artificially by playing with your blood sugar levels) when you smoke. So smoking is basically like hitting yourself over the head with a hammer because it feels really good when you stop!

A major reason why people say they can't or won't stop smoking is - they feel they would be giving up a very effective stress management technique. But once you stop smoking for a short period of time, you will become calmer, even under stress, than when you were a smoker.

Another smoking myths is that it 'cures boredom.' This argument is so pointless that it hardly merits much attention. Yes some people believe that it cures boredom, but so does banging your head against a wall and stabbing yourself with a fork. That doesn't mean it's either good for you, effective, productive or an adequate way to deal with the situation.

Again if you rely on cigarettes to cure boredom, all you are doing is telling yourself - 'I am not good enough to deal with this situation on my own. My cigarettes will take care of it.'

If you smoke due to boredom, you need to pay particular attention to changing your habits so that you have adequate new methods to keep yourself entertained.

Smoking as a stress relief mechanism is just and excuse. Many smokers know this but continue to lie to themselves because it prevents them from admitting that they cannot stop smoking.

Finding new ways to deal with stress is essential if you are going to make your stop smoking attempt a success.

Blood Pressure, What Do You Need To Know About It?

Hypertension is regarded as America's most prevalent chronic illness today; this requires a team effort and a lifelong treatment plan. As an important part of the team, you play a role that is vital in maintaining overall success that will prevent problems in the future. Having a complete understanding of your condition, appropriate lifestyle changes, proper medication if deemed necessary, a regular blood pressure checkup and visit to the doctor will enable you to come up with a successful fight against hypertension.

Hypertension doesn't actually mean that one is overly tense, although anxiety can raise blood pressure. Strain is created on your heart as blood is pushed through the circulatory system because of an increase in blood pressure. A certain amount of force or pressure is needed in order for blood to circulate. Every heartbeat provides blood that is pumped to all parts of the body. As the blood flows through the arteries, it exerts a force we commonly refer to as blood pressure. There are two numbers that are used to measure blood pressure. The higher number or what we call the systolic pressure and the lower number, called the diastolic pressure. As the heart squeezes to pump blood through the body, a pressure is created inside the artery and this pressure is the systolic pressure. Diastolic pressure on the other hand is the pressure inside the artery when the heart is in a relaxed stage and filling with blood. A person is considered to have a high blood pressure when there is a consistent reading of 140 mmHg(millimeters of mercury) or greater systolic and 90 mmHg or greater diastolic.

Blood Pressure

Most often high blood pressure doesn't show obvious symptoms and there have been many reported cases that a person only discovers his hypertension during a medical emergency. This is the reason why high blood pressure is commonly referred to as the "silent killer". It is therefore life saving to have your blood pressure checked regularly. Pressure readings from two or more visits to the doctor are necessary in order to confirm the diagnosis of hypertension.

Blood Pressure, What Do You Need To Know About It?

Blood pressure is affected by a number of factors. These include the strength of your heart, blood vessels' condition and the kidneys' health. A person who exercises regularly, most often has a healthy heart that can push more blood with each pump and will not need to beat as often in order to maintain a normal blood pressure. Blood pressure also depends upon the arteries. Hardened and narrowed arteries caused by old age or a high fat diet can make it harder for the blood to flow, causing the blood pressure to rise. When the arteries begin to clog, the heart is then subjected to harder work. The kidneys' health also affects blood pressure. Because the kidneys functions to maintain water and salt volume in the body, if the kidney retains too much water and salt then the blood pressure will also increase.

The heart and the arteries are usually at the losing end when there is long term uncontrolled hypertension. Uncontrolled hypertension can damage the body by increasing the heart and arteries' workload.

Controlling blood pressure can lessen a person's risk of heart disease, stroke and other life threatening illnesses.
