How Hormones Influence Blood Pressure to Rise

Hormones are the chemical messengers of the body since they release certain cells that affect tissues, muscles, and organ cells. Hormones influence blood pressure, like in the case of our kidneys where the hormonal imbalance of insulin leads to a diabetic disorder that progresses with high blood pressure complications.

If all the hormonal systems are not functioning properly or in harmony, the effect is sodium reabsorption which adversely affects the kidneys. However, this can still be controlled by proper diet or medications.

Blood Pressure

If there is excess insulin, the kidneys will reabsorb the sodium. By this, it means the cells will be influenced to re-absorb the sodium in the blood stream to cause an imbalance in the cells' mineral contents.

How Hormones Influence Blood Pressure to Rise

In this case, the particular hormone insulin will have an indirect influence in elevating blood pressure. This is common among obese or overweight people who crave for more sugar that will result to the production of excess insulin thereby making them susceptible to high blood pressure.

Another hormonal system that affects the pressure of blood is the angiotensin-renin-aldosterone system. In this particular function, the adrenal glands will produce aldosterone hormones to primarily induce the kidneys to retain chloride and sodium, and emit potassium. Again causing a disparity of mineral contents in each cell.

The aldosterone hormones are produced by the adrenal glands located at the top of the two kidneys. Aldosterone will influence the kidneys and sweat glands (acts similar to kidney functions) to preserve sodium. Even though the adrenal glands generate the aldosterone, the kidneys regulate it by releasing the renin enzyme and the angiotensin hormone.

As the kidneys release renin, the release of angiotensin follows. Angiotensin constricts the arterioles and signals the adrenal to discharge more aldosterone. Angiotensin constriction increases peripheral resistance or a condition where there is difficulty in circulating blood.

Aldosterone release on the other hand will cause the retention of salt. As a result, both hormones influence blood pressure levels while in the process of circulating blood in the kidneys.

Another cause of high blood pressure is the activation of the sympathetic nervous system which will produce renin when under the influence of stress. As mentioned earlier, when renin is discharged, angiotensin follows thereby making the blood pressure to rise. As an example, the sympathetic nervous system is activated when somebody threatens or attacks you with bodily harm.

Further, the production of renin is common among Type A personalities who are always in a competitive mood thereby inducing them to have high blood pressure. This is often treated by certain drugs that that will block the production of renin so that the angiotensin hormone will not influence the blood pressure.

Other factors being considered in the excessive production of renin are inadequate supply of magnesium in the body, serious illnesses leading to high blood pressure (secondary hypertension) and the rate at which the kidneys excrete sodium (natriuretic factors).

As can be inferred from the above, when a diet is high or low in sodium, it creates an imbalance of mineral contents in the cells where sodium is often the excessive substance.

Any excess of sodium over the calcium, potassium, and magnesium content in our body cells can trigger hormonal imbalance in our body system particularly the kidneys. Hormones influence blood pressure as a result of a series of chain reactions that emanates from improper dietary intakes.

Blood Pressure - The Good - The Bad - The Deadly!

Blood pressure is something we all have. It is the force of the blood against the walls of our arteries. As long as the "numbers" are within the good range everything is great. However, let those numbers start to rise and we have a problem. Depending upon how soon we find out about the rise in pressure (medical term is hypertension), we may have a very bad problem leading into what could result in a deadly situation.

There is a serious mistake about blood pressure that many people believe and that is that they can tell if their pressure is elevated without testing. Wrong. Wrong. Wrong! Hypertension is called the "silent killer" for a reason and that reason is often times there are no signs or symptoms. An individual cannot tell if their blood pressure is in the dangerous range unless they are tested. This can be done with a monitor purchased locally, from a health care provider (the nurse at a doctor's office or at a health screening) or some stores and malls have a blood pressure monitor for their customers.

Blood Pressure

As mentioned above, the frightening thing about developing hypertension is that there are no warning signs or symptoms. It doesn't matter about your age, it doesn't matter about your gender, and it doesn't matter about your race. Anyone can develop high blood pressure. It has been estimated that one out of every three or four American adults has hypertension.

Blood Pressure - The Good - The Bad - The Deadly!

The sad thing is that once it develops, it will last a lifetime; however, with diet, exercise, a weight loss program and stress management techniques many individuals have been able to come off their medication (with their physician's approval) and keep it under control.

Normal blood pressure should be less than 120/80 mmHg (millimeters of mercury). When we speak it, we say "120 over 80". The 120 mmHg is the systolic number (top number) and 80 mmHg is the diastolic number (down number).

High blood pressure is 140/90 or higher.
Prehypertension or high normal blood pressure is 130/85.

Tips for taking your blood pressure: Before having your blood pressure taken, go to the bathroom if you have to since a full bladder can change your measurement. Don't smoke cigarettes or drink coffee 30 minutes before being tested. Sit for 5 minutes with your back against the chair and feet flat on the floor before the measurement is taken. Rest your arm on the table. In order for the results to be accurate, your arm on the table needs to be at the level of your heart. Wear short sleeves so that your arm is exposed. There should be two readings taken at least two minutes apart then average the results. Don't forget to ask the doctor or nurse to give you the reading in numbers not whether the reading is normal, low, or high.

With the lifestyle that we live, we should encourage our children, starting at age 18, to have their blood pressure checked every 2 years. If an individual is over 40 years old, they should check their blood pressure often since most Americans are at risk after age 40.

Consider that you may be at an even higher risk level if you are overweight, have a family history of hypertension, eat food high in salt, don't exercise on a regular basis, smoke, drink alcohol (more than 2 drinks per day for men and 1 drink per day for women).

As the pressure increases so do your chances of getting heart disease, kidney disease, having a stroke or going blind. Not only does the quality of life suffer with these health issues, but consider how dealing with them can destroy you financially - even if you have insurance.

Begin now to take control of your health by eating better, doing moderate exercise, losing weight and following some simple stress management techniques to lower and control your hypertension. By controlling your blood pressure you may be able to spend your money on activities you can enjoy with your friends and family rather than struggling to pay your medical debt.

Blood Pressure, What Do You Need To Know About It?

Hypertension is regarded as America's most prevalent chronic illness today; this requires a team effort and a lifelong treatment plan. As an important part of the team, you play a role that is vital in maintaining overall success that will prevent problems in the future. Having a complete understanding of your condition, appropriate lifestyle changes, proper medication if deemed necessary, a regular blood pressure checkup and visit to the doctor will enable you to come up with a successful fight against hypertension.

Hypertension doesn't actually mean that one is overly tense, although anxiety can raise blood pressure. Strain is created on your heart as blood is pushed through the circulatory system because of an increase in blood pressure. A certain amount of force or pressure is needed in order for blood to circulate. Every heartbeat provides blood that is pumped to all parts of the body. As the blood flows through the arteries, it exerts a force we commonly refer to as blood pressure. There are two numbers that are used to measure blood pressure. The higher number or what we call the systolic pressure and the lower number, called the diastolic pressure. As the heart squeezes to pump blood through the body, a pressure is created inside the artery and this pressure is the systolic pressure. Diastolic pressure on the other hand is the pressure inside the artery when the heart is in a relaxed stage and filling with blood. A person is considered to have a high blood pressure when there is a consistent reading of 140 mmHg(millimeters of mercury) or greater systolic and 90 mmHg or greater diastolic.

Blood Pressure

Most often high blood pressure doesn't show obvious symptoms and there have been many reported cases that a person only discovers his hypertension during a medical emergency. This is the reason why high blood pressure is commonly referred to as the "silent killer". It is therefore life saving to have your blood pressure checked regularly. Pressure readings from two or more visits to the doctor are necessary in order to confirm the diagnosis of hypertension.

Blood Pressure, What Do You Need To Know About It?

Blood pressure is affected by a number of factors. These include the strength of your heart, blood vessels' condition and the kidneys' health. A person who exercises regularly, most often has a healthy heart that can push more blood with each pump and will not need to beat as often in order to maintain a normal blood pressure. Blood pressure also depends upon the arteries. Hardened and narrowed arteries caused by old age or a high fat diet can make it harder for the blood to flow, causing the blood pressure to rise. When the arteries begin to clog, the heart is then subjected to harder work. The kidneys' health also affects blood pressure. Because the kidneys functions to maintain water and salt volume in the body, if the kidney retains too much water and salt then the blood pressure will also increase.

The heart and the arteries are usually at the losing end when there is long term uncontrolled hypertension. Uncontrolled hypertension can damage the body by increasing the heart and arteries' workload.

Controlling blood pressure can lessen a person's risk of heart disease, stroke and other life threatening illnesses.

High Blood Pressure - How It's Measured

In this article we're going to discuss exactly how high blood pressure in a person is measured.

A person's blood pressure is commonly measured with an instrument called a blood pressure cuff or sphygmomanometer. The blood pressure cuff is made up of an air pump, a pressure gauge, and a rubber cuff. The device measures the blood pressure in units called millimeters of mercury.

Blood Pressure

The procedure for taking blood pressure is as follows. The cuff is placed around the patient's upper arm and inflated with an air pump to a pressure which blocks the flow of blood in the main artery that travels through the person's arm. The arm is extended at the side of the body at heart level. At this time, the pressure from the cuff is slowly released. As the pressure is released, the person doing the procedure, usually a nurse, listens with a stethoscope to the artery at the front of the elbow. The pressure reading at which a pulse is first heard is the systolic pressure. At the point where the pressure finally stops pulsating is the diastolic pressure.

High Blood Pressure - How It's Measured

Blood pressure is affected by a number of factors and therefore it is important to standardize the environment when blood pressure is taken. For one hour before taking your blood pressure you should avoid eating, exercise and smoking. These will all affect your blood pressure. There are other stresses that affect blood pressure and should also be avoided.

Most insurance companies consider high blood pressure to be anything above 140/90. However, these may not be appropriate measurements for everybody. As a matter of fact, professionals now believe that there are varying stages of high blood pressure, from a low end to a high end. The range as is now defined is between 120/80 to 139/89. This is called the pre hypertension range and people who fall within this range should think about trying to lower their blood pressure. Usually in pre hypertension cases, simple life style changes are enough to lower the pressure.

For some people, however, a blood pressure reading of 130/80 is perfectly normal especially if they have experienced kidney problems or even kidney disease. The purpose of lowering the pressure in these cases is to reduce the damage done to the kidneys. Patients with diabetes may also benefit from having their blood pressure lowered to 130/80. African Americans may benefit by having their blood pressure lowered to 135/80. The reason that these cases are not lowered to 120/80 is because that is not a realistic goal in their case.

In some cases a person may have isolated systolic or diastolic high blood pressure, meaning that the top or bottom number is elevated while the other number is normal. Examples would be 150/80 or 120/90. In these cases a person is still considered to have high blood pressure and should be treated accordingly.

Patients with borderline high blood pressure may not need immediate treatment but they should keep a careful eye on their blood pressure by having regular checkups.

Diastolic High Blood Pressure Taken Seriously

For blood pressure patients who wonder what those numbers mean when getting BPs, here is an explanation. Two figures are observed when taking blood pressures (e.g. 140/90). 140 stands for systolic pressure, 90 is the diastolic pressure. A normal systolic pressure should not exceed 140, and a normal diastolic pressure is no more than 90. An increase in both pressures can mean disaster.

Systolic hypertension is different from diastolic high blood pressure. The former is characterized by sudden augmentation in the pressure of blood when the heart is contracting.

Blood Pressure

Diastolic high blood pressure on the other hand refers to the blood pressure in between muscle contractions. Doctors and medical experts have stated that diastolic high blood pressure should be taken seriously and that it causes more harm to the body than systolic does. In recent studies, persons below 65 or 70 who are diagnosed with hypertension reported increase incidents of diastolic high blood pressure. This higher rate of diastolic pressure causes adverse effects on the brain, heart and kidney. Patients of diastolic high blood pressure are advised to lower diastolic pressure by maintaining below 90. Systolic pressure is also required to be lowered though a top priority is focused on diastolic pressure.

Diastolic High Blood Pressure Taken Seriously

Causes of diastolic high blood pressure include aging of the heart and its natural effects. When a person grows old his heart muscles get weary and eventually stiffen making it harder for the heart to fill in blood appropriately. Diastolic high blood pressure, if not treated well, may lead to diastolic heart failure. Diagnosis of diastolic high blood pressure may risk the patient of diseases and illnesses like CAD or coronary heart disease, aortic stenosis, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, and other pericardial diseases.

Aside from aging, poor lifestyle like smoking and drinking, high cholesterol levels, obesity, high salt consumption, prior cardiac surgery, viral infection, family history and diabetes are also leading contributors to the occurrence of diastolic high blood pressure.

For the last 30 years, studies have also been conducted and challenged the severity of diastolic high blood pressure. In the latest issue of Archives of Internal Medicine, reports have declared that there is a great urge to control systolic pressure than diastolic pressure in hypertension patients. Elaborately, diastolic high blood pressure exposes little risk of getting other cardiovascular disorders.

In special cases of hypertension, systolic hypertension is more common than diastolic high blood pressure among elder patients. Their blood vessels have degraded resulting in the increase in systolic pressure. Advise is given to patients with these condition to lower their systolic pressure and keep it.

How to Lower Blood Pressure without Medication

High blood pressure affects more than 50 million Americans and hundreds of millions worldwide. The number of high blood pressure cases keeps increasing because more and more people are living stressful lives and eating junk-food that is rich in fats. Those who drink alcohol and smoke for a long time are also at a great risk of having high blood pressure.

High blood pressure itself is not an illness that damages the body, but if you suffer from high blood pressure for a long time then you are at a great risk to have a stroke or a heart-attack, or to develop a heart disease. Most of the people who have heart disease started with a high blood pressure that they did not treat.

Blood Pressure

High blood pressure doesn't have any visible symptoms, so many people have it and they aren't aware about it. It is usually discovered during routine medical controls, but a single measurement is not enough to discover it, because anyone can have high blood pressure after a stressful event or after practicing sports. If the doctor measures the blood pressure and its values are high every time then you have high blood pressure.

How to Lower Blood Pressure without Medication

If you want to lower your blood pressure then you have two choices: medication and natural treatment. Many prefer to lower their blood pressure without medication because the drugs must be taken for the entire lifetime and they may not be effective or may have side-effects.

If you want to lower your blood pressure without medication you need to do two main things: to change your lifestyle and your diet.

The lifestyle must be changed so that it contains as little stress as possible, and you must start to exercise regularly. You can also try some relaxation tehniques such as yoga. Some experts state that yoga can lower blood pressure in short time if it's done properly.
If you are overweight you need to lose weight. Every lost pound can lower the blood pressure a little.
Finally, alcohol and tobacco must be eliminated completely since they seriously increase the blood pressure.

The diet must be changed so that it contains as little sodium as possible. Sodium is an important mineral that the body needs daily, but if the needed quantity is exceeded it can raise the blood pressure dramatically. Salt is the main sodium source. A teaspoon of salt contains twice the normal amount of sodium, and many types of food also contain sodium, so it's easy to consume much more sodium than the body needs. The easiest way to cut down sodium is to eat very little salt or none.

After studying the effects of several types of food on blood pressure, scientists have developed an eating plan called DASH - Dietary Approach to Stop Hypertension. DASH states that you should eat only fruits, vegetables, grains, fish and low-fat dairy products, and very few red meats, sweets and other foods that are rich in fats.

It's simple to lower blood pressure without medication, but always consult a doctor before deciding on a diet plan or on any natural method of lowering blood pressure.

Normal Blood Pressure Reading Know-How

So you want to know what your normal blood pressure reading is. The next time you visit the
doctor, you ask the nurse's aide to tell you. That is after she finishes putting the cuff on your arm,
pumping it until you think your arm is going to explode, and then she rattles off a number...
124/86. Well, that is fine, but what does that mean?

A blood pressure reading measures the pumping action of the heart. The first number is a reading
of the systolic pressure, or the pressure exerted by your heart to pump oxygenated blood into the
aorta, the largest blood vessel in the body. This vessel branches off into other, smaller vessels
that oxygenate every organ, tissue and cell in your body. The bottom number, a diastolic
pressure, reads your heart at rest, or between beats.

Blood Pressure

Blood pressure readings for healthy individuals will usually range around120/80. Some people
may have varying numbers like 124/82 or 126/84 or so. You always get your blood pressure
reading in even numbers, but if someone does give you a reading with an odd number, just round
up to keep things simple. Keep in mind that your age, weight, exercise level and diet may also
have much to do with a blood pressure reading. Some people who exercise a lot and are healthy
have blood pressures hovering around 110 over 70, and that is normal, for them. The same goes
if the numbers are a little higher.

Normal Blood Pressure Reading Know-How

However, a normal blood pressure reading becomes a high blood pressure reading when those
numbers reach around 140/90 or so. There are several different levels typical to high blood
pressure, or hypertension, so speak to your doctor if your levels are over the 126/86 ranges.

It is difficult to pinpoint a single cause for high blood pressure, as many factors usually coincide
to produce the condition. For some, high blood pressure is inherited, and African-Americans
suffer more from high blood pressure, or hypertension, than Caucasians. Medical issues may also
cause a rise in a normal blood pressure reading, so it is a good idea to have your pressure checked
at least periodically. Nearly 65 million Americans suffer from high blood pressure, and countless
others who have not been diagnosed are walking around with the condition without even
realizing it.

As people age, high blood pressure becomes more prevalent. However, preserving a healthy
weight, exercising regularly and eating a well-balanced diet will help to prevent high blood
pressure. Stay away from excess salt, alcohol and high fat diets, and if you smoke, try to quit.
Studies have shown that certain medications may cause high blood pressure, so speak to your
doctor about risks if you are taking certain prescription drugs.

A normal blood pressure reading may not seem like a big deal to many people, but as we grow
older, it may mean the difference between a healthy, active lifestyle, or sitting your later years out
on the bench. Take an active part in your health, especially heart health, and your body, and your
family and friends, will thank you for it.

How to Stay Calm Under Pressure - Stress Tips For Surviving Tough Times

Staying calm under pressure can be so important, but it's one of the hardest things to do. We're not exactly wired that way. So what does it take?

1) Be prepared

Calm Blood

First of all, it helps to be prepared. Know that sooner or later, there'll be a stressful situation, and you'll want to make sure to have your arsenal of self-calming strategies handy and ready to go.

How to Stay Calm Under Pressure - Stress Tips For Surviving Tough Times

2) Breathe

Yes, breathe. This is not a joke. When we get stressed, our breath gets very shallow, and the body responds with generating stress hormones. If we take slow deep belly breaths, the vagus nerve gets stimulated, which results in more calming hormones. Ergo: instant calm. Or at least calmer.

3) Time out

If you can, get some time out. Kids are not the only ones that can benefit. Go for a walk outside if you can to clear your head, work off some of the stress hormones in your body and, yes, breathe. Think. Get a bit of perspective before you return to face whatever it is you must face.

If going outside is not an option, excuse yourself to go to be bathroom. Or walk a flight of stairs or two. Anything to get away for a moment.

4) Focus on the positive

Focusing on the positive makes a huge difference and can rapidly transform how you feel. There are two ways to do that. You can focus on the preferred outcome of the situation, maybe in the long run if that's all you can come up with. Think: What WOULD I like to happen?

Or you can focus on any positive aspects of the situation, starting with the most basic (you're alive. You can walk, talk, see, etc.) and moving to the more sophisticated (find SOMETHING positive about the situation or person who is aggravating you).

5) Do what you can -- one thing at a time

Think about what you CAN do in this situation, and do it, one thing at a time. If it's a test situation, take it one question at a time, doing the easy ones first. If it's an argument that you can't win, bow out, or beg for time out to think, or even, if the end result is inevitable, get it over with and be wrong sooner (I'm sorry you feel that way). The latter is a strategy I learned from the late Roger Mellott. It's the "lose the battle and win the fight" principle. If it's an overwhelming job, start with one thing that will move you in the right direction.

There are many other ways to reduce stress, from aromatherapy to EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique). In the meantime, if you use the five in this article, you'll find they'll make a big difference in your stress levels. Take that breath, do what you can, picture your desired outcome, and you'll feel calm -- or at least a lot calmer -- quickly.

High Blood Pressure During Exercise

A study from Johns Hopkins shows that people who develop very high blood pressure during exercise are the ones most likely to develop high blood pressure in later years (American Journal of Hypertension, April 2004.) These people have arteries that do not expand as much as normal arteries when blood is pumped to them.

When your heart beats, it squeezes blood from inside its chambers to the large arteries. This sudden bolus of blood causes normal arteries to expand like balloons do when they fill with air. The walls of arteries have sensors that allow arteries to expand with each pulse of blood. If the arteries do not expand enough when blood enters them, blood pressure can rise very high. Blood pressure is determined by the force of the heart's contraction times the resistance in the blood vessels. Normal blood pressure is 120 when the heart contracts and 80 when it relaxes. During exercise, the heart beats with increased force to raise blood pressure. It is normal for blood pressure to rise up to 200 over 80 during running, and to 300 over 200 while doing a leg press with very heavy weights.

Blood Pressure

People with normal resting blood pressures who develop very high blood pressure during exercise are the ones most likely to develop high blood pressure later on. If your blood pressure rises much above 200 during running, you are at increased risk for developing high blood pressure.

High Blood Pressure During Exercise

Ninety percent of Americans will develop high blood pressure, which increases risk for heart attacks, strokes, kidney damage and sudden death. High blood pressure usually occurs in people who have normal blood pressures when they were young. If you have an exaggerated blood pressure rise during exercise, you should go on a heart attack prevention program that includes a diet that is high in plants and low in saturated fats and refined carbohydrates, regular exercise, losing weight if you are overweight, not smoking, and avoiding stimulants and drugs that raise blood pressure.

How To Lower Diastolic Blood Pressure, Safely?

High blood pressure also commonly known as hypertension can be fatal if not treated. Hypertension is known for causing the hardening of the arteries and may get worst if is not addressed. What does all this have to do with a how to lower diastolic blood pressure?

One of the most important numbers in determining pressure reading is the diastolic number in the reading. It is the number at the bottom of the line when the reading is express as e.g 120/80. In this case it is 80, and the systolic number is 120. A lower diastolic blood pressure reading is preferable as the higher that number the greater the risk to developing hypertension, and becoming a victim to this silent killer is more likely.

Blood Pressure

Here are seven, safe and powerful ways to maintain a normal pressure reading.

How To Lower Diastolic Blood Pressure, Safely?

1. Know your risk factors

Obesity due to over eating and lack of exercise Too much sodium or salt intake Habit of smoking and excessive alcohol drinking Physical and mental stress Heredity or genetics Old age

2. Always monitor

You can monitor your pressure by using a sphygmomanometer and knowing the different ranges in the reading. In the list below note the levels of they diastolic reading - the lower number. Take a close look at how both the systolic (upper number) and the diastolic (lower number) increases as the level of hypertension stages increases. Again, it is important to know how to lower diastolic blood pressure in order to minimize the risk of hypertension.

Normal - 119/79 and below Pre-Hypertension - 120-139/80-89 First stage hypertension - 140-159/90-99 Second stage hypertension -: 160/100 and above

3. Know the signs and symptoms Here are the most common signs and symptoms

Severe headaches Fatigue due to physical stress Blurry vision Chest congestion Breathing problems Heartbeat irregularities Blood in the urine

4. Maintain a proper diet

Avoid foods high in sodium, cholesterol and saturated fat Consume foods rich in potassium, calcium and vitamin c. Eat fruits, vegetables, low-fat dairy products and wheat

5. Lose some weight

Lose weight if you are 30% above your normal weight or more Exercise regularly

6. Drug ad Natural Supplements

Use herbal treatments such as garlic, burdock or Hawthorne Use conventional treatments prescribed by doctors such as diuretics, beta-blockers and calcium channel blockers.

Finally, educate yourself; just by reading this article you have already started the process of doing that. The resource box below provides and excellent resource on hypertension and more importantly how to keep your eye on maintaining a lower diastolic blood pressure reading as indicated in the list provided above. Do not keep in the dark about this. This is the most important step to curbing this lethal silent killer, hypertension.
